She sat near the door, dressed in the only trousers and cloak she could find. A thin strip of sheet wrapped around each fist, the quickest weapon she could make from this bare room. Any moment now, Erik would have to open her door, and sheâd be ready to jump him with the piece of scrap cloth around his throat.
This was personal now, this revenge. No longer would she let him put his hands on her, shake her into submission. She had been patient, unlike his assessment, but he never learned. He never would until he paid the price for his mistakes.
The lock finally rattled, and she shifted her weight onto her toes. Hiding in the shadow of the door as it opened, she waited until he stepped inside before slowly closing it behind him, taking care not to shut it completely.
Ailsa lunged from behind, about to loop the strip of sheet around his neck until she noticed the auburn hair in the candlelight, the thin shoulders that were several inches closer to her reach than Erikâs burly frame.
âSkide,â she cursed, causing him to startle and spin around. âItâs just you.â Her hands fell to her side as the strip went slack. He wasnât wearing a mask today, instead appearing like he was going on a journey, obvious from the cowl wrapped around his neck. âWhat are you doing here? And how did you get the key from Erik?â
The silent man spoke in very subtle ways, with his eyes and the lines around his mouth, often wearing his heart on his sleeve. Today, however, Ailsa saw anger in his golden eyes. An emotion she hadnât yet seen him wear.
He set the tray down and picked up a cup. Jutting a finger toward Erikâs room, he then followed the motion with a sleeping face.
âYou knocked him out?â Ailsa gasped. The silent man nodded with a solemn smile. Her heart pounded with new possibilities. The door was open. Erik was sedated. She just needed to grab her map and find a way out of the mountain. âCan you show me how to get out of here?â
He held up a single finger and turned back to the tray once more, this time grabbing a knife. His nimble fingers tapped his temple, then hers. With the same hand, he grabbed her palm and dragged the blade lightly across the inside of their hands. There was only one ceremony he could be referring to, bleeding them both.
âYou want to make a blood bond with me? Are you sure? This will bind you to me in ways I cannot fully expect.â
The man nodded and tapped their temples successively. Ailsa learned about blood runes with Njord all those foggy memories ago, and the one who spoke the rune to life would have submission over the other, a spoken contract written and sealed in blood. If she did this, perhaps they could speak to each other through thought alone. âYou trust me to do this?â
The man nodded and flipped the knife so that the handle faced her.
